Used forklifts find varied applications in the industrial sector. Used forklifts can work best where they are applied intermittently.
So, if your requirement fits any of the following criteria, think of buying a used forklift rather than opting for the new forklifts for sale. In this article, we discuss the tips to select the right second hand forklifts.
Availability
Through dealers, you will find forklifts, which were earlier a part of lease retirements, rental units and a part of trade-ins. Normally, rental used trucks are considered better options as end-users use new forklifts for some years before trading them in for a better option.
Petrol engine forklifts are used for 7 years approximately before a trade-in. Electric forklifts are used for approximately 10 years before a trade-in. So, you can choose your option according to your requirements and the work atmosphere.
Inspection
Do a physical examination of second hand forklifts to check the status of the machine. If you are not well-versed with the engine technology, hire a mechanic who can conduct a thorough evaluation of your prospective investment.
First, check the operations of the mast, check its power with a full load and without a load. Shift the mast backwards and forwards completely to check if there’s some excessive play between the mast and the carriage and between both the mast channels.
Inspect the transmission lines, radiator, engines, tilt cylinders and the mast of used forklift models for any leaks and other wear and tear. Carefully examine for any leaks and gauge the right cost of repairs before finalising the purchase.
Test drive
Before starting with the test drive, take a few moments to observe and examine the second-hand forklift. Roughed up or dented body panels will signify careless and reckless operation. A test drive will give you an idea of the condition of the engine and the overall vehicle.
Once you have done a visual observation and are satisfied with the results, you can then take it for a test drive. Drive in a pattern of figure 8 both backwards and forwards to check its balance and its gears. The truck should respond quickly to steering instruction and should track its steps quickly as commanded.
