Top Things To Look at When Buying Second Hand Forklifts

Do you plan to buy used forklifts? Here are the top five things that you need to check in a used forklift before you make the final purchase.

  1. Check for gaps on the lift chain

Check the mast of the forklift for any kind of welding marks or cracks on the mats that may have been fixed. Inspect the weld quality if you find any. Because poor weld quality will impact the performance and the mast’s structural integrity.

Inspect the lift chains in the centre of the mast for any corroded or missing pins/links.

  2. Check for damages

When inspecting Second hand forklifts, begin from the front. Check for bends, cracks and more signs of tear and wear in the machine. Cracks can be worrisome and are an indication that the forklift needs replacement.

Also, check the fork blade heel. Closely look into its thickness. If the thickness doesn’t match the upright fork shank then the fork is worn out and needs replacement.

  3. Inspect the tyres

Unlike new forklifts for sale, another sign of worn-out tires is the tread of the tires; they would be non-existent or rough. Hence, check the tires for chunking.

Look at the safety line or wear line of the tyres. If the tyres are worn past this line, then they need to get replaced.

  4. Check mast functions

Ask the seller/dealer to raise the forks to a maximum height to extend the third or second mast of the Second hand forklifts.

Signs of hiccups during the process is an indication that the link chain requires fixing. The rollers of the mast could be worn out or the rollers are not well maintained or lubricated properly.

Worn out mast rollers appear oval or lopsided in shape and not perfectly round as they are supposed to be.

  5. Check the battery life

Most buyers don't check the battery life but this step is critical. Ask the dealer what the type of usage of the forklift is. If the forklift was being used in double shits, then the battery life would be much shorter than expected. In general, the battery lasts for almost 5 years if the forklift was used in single shifts.
